Rules of Development
  1. Keep in mind that this world may be published in one way or another. I encourage you not to integrate any concepts of a story or RPG world that you are creating and intend to publish independent of Aserra.
  2. Any ideas you use must be original, as if I publish this game, I would not like to get slapped with copyright infringement suit for a rip-off I didn't catch.
  3. Do not model any nations or cultures entirely after existing nations and cultures in the real world. You may use aspects of any existing cultures, though, and it would be best to mix things up too.
  4. There is a need to be reasonable with cultures, abilities, and the like that are created for Aserra. I don't want nations that are the epitome of perfection, or an entirely unreasonable set of abilities that causes them to be sensationally over powered compared to others of their race.
  5. I must give approval for anything major created by other players, so until I tell you that I'm ok with that, don't automatically assume that it'll be canon.

Interracials

Interracials
Many of Aserra’s diverse races can reproduce together, though there are a few that cannot. Interracial are generally rare as most races tend to keep to themselves sexually and romantically, but there are some exceptions to this rule. Interracial offspring may possess some magic and special abilities from their parent races, and certain traits will remain prominent in them, marking them as different to both races. Interracial individuals often feel out of place and are sometimes ostracized for their differences.

The term “half-elf” is often erroneously applied to many interracials, as the term “elf” has been assigned to many of Aserra’s Idayn and Nafod races by humans. The concept of elves originates with a race of fae that was known to live alongside the gods. The Idayn bore a resemblance to the elves which some humans were already familiar with, and the term became wide-spread. Some Idayn simply accept this and shrug it off, but none of the races have made much of a campaign to teach humans to address them properly. In societies where the “elf” term is widely used, the word is applied to anyone with tapered ears and no other distinguishing features, and carried over into mixed-race offspring with these races as half-elf, which many interracials adopted for simplicity’s sake. Though the can suffer far more disparaging names, such as “half-breed”, “half-blood”, “mutt”, or other terms.

Interracial offspring often face many hardships. Their differences and relations with their parent races may ostracize them in one or both of their parents’ societies. Even if they are accepted socially, they may still feel out of place, or must deal with the realities of living longer or shorter lifespans than those they love.

Physical Traits
Interracial offspring take traits from both their parents’ races. The elemental races all have long, tapered ears while humans, Kiar, and Iengi all have small, rounded ears, and the Kuzo have large, pointed flap-like ears. Typically, when an individual of an elemental race reproduces with a human, the offspring will have the long, tapered ears which are halved in length from their elemental parent. These ears may be altered surgically to allow the child to fit into human society better, but without modern anesthesia, antibiotics, or a competent surgeon, some parents may not be willing to subject their child to this procedure if they feel the risks outweigh the benefit of fitting in.

Heterochromia Iridium, or eyes of two different colors, may commonly occur amongst interracial offspring, especially between human and elemental races. Full heterochromia is a rare genetic abnormality that occurs in humans from time to time (and sometimes linked to genetic ailments), but it will be allowed more readily for interracial RPG characters as a genetic quirk caused by their mixed heritage.

Other traits are race specific and will be addressed in further entries.

Magical Abilities
The elemental races are the only ones with an inherent magic system. Some individuals of other races may have their own special abilities or a capacity for higher spiritual strength that makes them more adept at using magic; traits which can be genetic and passed on to their interracial offspring. In the case of elemental races, the interracial child will only inherit elementalism if born to a mother of the elemental race. When a woman of one of these races becomes pregnant, her offspring is automatically incarnated with the soul of the same elemental spirit, regardless of racial purity. However, while they may have the correct soul for elementalism, human blood often makes the ability harder to access and control, so they will rarely measure up to their full-blooded peers.

Lifespan
The races of Aserra have widely varied lifespans ranging from practically immortal in the case of the Dra’nafod and Idayn to the nearly 100 year lifespan of humans, and the mere 20 year lifespan of the Kiar. Typically, the potential lifespan of an interracial child falls somewhere in between the lifespans of their parent races. This longer lifespan often further ostracizes interracials as adults as they can outlive potential lovers, spouses, and perhaps even their own children.

Potential Combinations
The following races can reproduce with each other, but some have unique conditions for reproduction depending on location, society, culture, and genetic traits. The following races cannot reproduce with others:
  • Asath, due to their snake tails are incompatible with other races.
  • Eain’Idayn, as their equine halves are incompatible with other races.
  • Marfod, due to their aquatic life cannot reproduce with other bipeds, and they are genetically incompatible with Mariel in their marine form.
  • Samiss, as reptiles are incompatible with the mammalian races (even Asath).
  • Vampires and Homunculi cannot reproduce biologically at all.
The races marked above with an asterisk rarely have interracial children, except in special cases.
  • The Zaedyn have a hard time reproduction with other races due to the genetic complications of their wings. Childbearing with individuals of other races often occurs within a committed relationship as it is more likely to conceive a non-viable pregnancy and takes many attempts to beat the odds for a viable one.
  • The Mariel undergo a transformation in their twentieth year when their fins turn to legs, their scales disappear, and their gills close, forcing them to breath air on the surface. Only in this period can they reproduce with bipeds. It is easy for a male Mariel to impregnate a woman while on land, but the situation is more complicated for female Mariel who may not have time to bear their child before the year is up, which could lead to miscarriage due to the transformation, abandoning their child on shore if it survives her transformation, or giving up entirely on returning to the ocean and remaining a biped for the rest of their life, which is typically significantly shortened if they remain on land.
  • There are no physiological issues preventing the Brech’mar from reproducing with other races, the problem arises from differences in opinion on beauty and size between Brech’mar and potential partners, as well as cultural norms and expectations.
  • Due to the seclusion and isolationist ways of the Idayn, very few opportunities arise for interracial reproduction, especially with humans. Half-Idayn are often shunned by the Idayn community.
  • The Aeul’Idayn are the only race that inhabits Athok, and though they occasionally have contact with other races, reproduction with them is rare.
  • The massive difference in size between the Kiar and other races complicates reproduction in many ways. Physically, female Kiar could face serious health complications in carrying a child of a larger race. Individuals of other races often find a Kiar of childbearing age disturbingly child-like, especially considering that they are actually on a few years old. The Kiar also are very monogamous and generally prefer to keep their own kind.
  • The Kuzo are considered to be sub-human and very unattractive to other races. However, Kuzo males are known to kidnap and rape women of other races, which has led to pregnancy. These pregnancies may be terminated¹ or the babies killed in some cases, though. Kuzo females being impregnated by members of other races is incredibly rare.
  • The Iengi are genetically comparable with other races, but much like the Kuzo, they are considered sub-human and unattractive—along with the fact that they are much larger than other races. Also like the Kuzo, smaller Iengi males can capture and rape females of other races, resulting in pregnancy, though such a pregnancy can be a threat to the health of the mother considering the potential size of the baby.
  • Female fae, gods, demons, and other spirit beings from higher planes can become pregnant by having sex with mortal men, even if they are on another plane. Their children are born native to their mother’s realm, but fairies sometimes switch their shape-shifting children (known as Changlings) with human children. Male spirit beings cannot impregnate mortal women without crossing over into the physical plane with a temporary body that can carry their genetic material.
¹ Abortion is not a new concept. Pregnancies have been terminated for centuries often using toxic concoctions called abortifacients, as well as the use of sharpened implements to remove the pregnancy from the uterus, the application of pressure to the abdomen, and other techniques. Such techniques can be practiced by Aserrans as well, and would be applied for unwanted pregnancies caused by sex out of wedlock, infidelity, rape, and interracial sex depending on the opinion of the mother-to-be, her family, and her cultural notions.

Half-Human

Post by World of Aserra » Sun Jan 11, 2009 8:47 pm

Half-Human
Humans are the most wide-spread and diverse race in Aserra, inhabiting every continent except Athok and with a curiosity that can often lead to intimate relationships with other races. Despite the fact that they are at odds with nearly every other race in Aserra, humans are involved in the majority if interracial mixes and some of the Idayn sub-races are saturated with human ancestry.

Some of the most common pairings with humans are Danaij in the Forsaken Land, Ery’Idayn in the Great Desert of Thiskel, Fayl’Idayn in eastern Kalesten, and Ochae’nafod and Dra’nafod all over the northern hemisphere. Humans are also a common choice of partner in the rare cases of Zaedyn, Mariel, Brech’mar, Idayn and their sub-races, and Kiar mate outside their races. Human women are also more likely to be victims of Kuzo or Iengi rape due to the larger population and the fact that on a whole, human women are less likely to be trained in combat or magic than other races.

Humans
Physical Appearance
With a wide variety of shapes and sizes, the outcome of interracial offspring is hard to define solely on behalf of a human. The one physical trait that sets humans apart from other races is their small, rounded ears which are only shared with their cousins; the Kiar and Iengi. When reproducing with a member of an elemental race, the long, tapered ears indicative of those races are halved in length in their offspring. In successive generations of human breeding, the ears halve in length again for a quarter-blood, leaving the third generation child with pointed and possibly only slightly elongated ears, while the fourth or fifth generation is unmistakable for pure-blooded human.

Magical Abilities
Humans have no inherent magic, though some individuals may have unique abilities or a higher capacity for spiritual power that can be passed on to their offspring. If a human fathers a child with a mother of an elemental race, the child will inherit the mother’s magic, but if born to a human mother and elemental father, the child will not inherit elementalism. Those with elementalism may be slightly less capable of the magic than their pure-blooded peers due to their human traits.

Lifespan
Humans have one of the shorter lifespans of Aserrans. They have the potential to live for about 100 years, but on average, most humans live into their fifties due to many diseases, poor health care, less than ideal diets, and many other causes. The elemental races tend to have better health, which can carry over into their mixed-race offspring. Generally, the lifespan of an interracial child is a median between the two parent races. In the case of the elemental races, many of which live for hundreds of years, the child will usually outlive their human peers. Though, in the cases of half-Kiar and half-Kuzo, the child may stand to live a shorter life than a human, but longer than their other parent’s race.

Half-Zaedyn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jan 12, 2009 12:39 am

Half-Zaedyn
The Zaedyn are an amicable and open people, though they see few visitors in their mountaintop cities. This openness allows for relationships with individuals of other races when the opportunity presents itself. However, their wings prove to complicate bearing children in these relationships. In most cases of half-Zaedyn, they are born to committed parents who wanted to have children and tried for many years, suffering miscarriages and stillbirths before one successful, viable pregnancy produces the child in question.

Humans, Idayn, Ochae’nafod, and Dra’nafod are partners most often chosen in these rare situations. The Brech’mar are one of the Zaedyn’s closest neighbors, but they are unlikely partners as most Brech’mar find the Zaedyn to be too delicate for their liking, and the Zaedyn find the Brech’mar to be too heavy for their liking. Pairings with other elemental races tend to have the most success in bearing children with other elemental races, which seems to be a throwback to the base design of the elemental races.
Relevant Links
Zaedyn | Air Elementalism
Physical Traits
The most notable trait of the Zaedyn, their wings, is never inherited to its full glory in interracial offspring. Some individuals may have small useless wings, while others have horribly deformed wings, and yet others have a mismatched pair with a small healthy wing and a deformed wing. If the wings are deformed, many parents may opt to have them surgically removed, though small but well-shaped wings are often left alone. In cases of a mismatched healthy and deformed pair, parents may opt to remove the deformed wing and leave a single healthy small wing. Those born with a healthy pair of wings will never be able to fly on them, as the wing span is around only four feet wide.

Zaedyn have a wide variety of coloration depending on where they are from, so the coloration of a half-Zaedyn is dependent on the phenotypes of both parents. Ears will be half-length from a full-blooded Zaedyn if born to a human parent, but full length if born to another elemental race. They are also more likely to be slim and fine-boned. They may be larger than their Zaedyn relatives, but most Zaedyn are more attracted to slim and lean individuals like themselves.

Magical Abilities
A child born to a Zaedyn mother and human father will have an ability for Air elementalism, though diminished, as the child will be incarnated with a Sylph soul. However, the other way around (human mother and Zaedyn father), the child will inherit no magical ability from their Zaedyn side.

Lifespan
Born to a human and Zaedyn, an interracial child will live half the lifespan of a Zaedyn; between three hundred and three hundred and fifty (300-350). Born to a mother of another race, a half-Zaedyn’s lifespan would be the median between the average of both races.

Half-Mariel

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:07 pm

Half-Mariel
Every Mariel undergoes a transformation at the age of twenty that turns their fins to legs and forces them to breath air so that they can travel the land for a single year. Only in this year can a Mariel sire or conceive a child with a bi-pedal race (commonly human, rarely other races).

Though thoroughly warned of the consequences of these inevitably brief affairs, some Mariel do have flings or fall in love with humans in their time on land. These relationships can end in heartbreak when the Mariel must return to the sea by their twenty-first birthday, but there are some who refuse to return. If they do not return, they are trapped as bipeds for the rest of their lives and stripped of their Water Elementalism. Many Mariel who chose to stay behind fall into deep depression that can drive them to suicide or significantly shorten their lives.

The majority of Mariel who have stayed on land are females who have fallen in love with a biped, and most commonly, have become pregnant while on land. A pregnant Mariel can risk miscarriage or pre-term labor if she attempts to return to the sea, which is a risk many expectant mothers aren’t prepared to take. Those that do risk it then face the problem of delivering their child in their true form in which they can only survive underwater, and abandoning their child as the baby will not have the Mariel traits necessary to survive. These mothers may have a support system on land through any villages that traditionally help young Mariel come ashore, which will allow them to deliver near shore and find someone to adopt her child if the father isn’t available.

Half-Mariel have transformation quirks of their own, dependent on whether they were born to a Mariel mother or a human mother. Both kinds of half-Mariel feel drawn to the ocean as they approach the age of twenty. Those born to a Mariel mother will only transform if they enter the ocean, at which point they will permanently transform into Mariel. Those sired by a Mariel father will began to transform shortly before their birthday, and if they do not enter the sea by time the transformation is complete, they will die of suffocation. These individuals experience the reverse of their father’s transformation; they can spend a year in the ocean as a Mariel (sans water elementalism), and at the end of that year, they may return to land. If they do not return to land in time, they will remain a Mariel for the rest of their lives.

Individuals of one-quarter Mariel blood may undergo partial transformations. They too feel a draw to the ocean, but not as strongly as their half-blooded parent. For these individuals, those born to a half-Mariel mother born of a full Mariel mother, they may undergo a partial transformation if they come in contact with seawater around their twentieth year. This can include the emergence of scales on prominent regions such as the hips, thighs, shins, elbows, knees, and collar bone, webbed fins between the fingers and toes, gills on the sides which can be usable along with normal lung-breathing, or a slight emergence of fins along the back of the forearm or sides of the legs. A quarter-Mariel born to a half-Mariel father sired by a full Mariel will endure a forced partial transformation that leaves many of the above listed traits permanently. Subsequent generations will inherit none of these traits, but may still feel the pull of the ocean for a couple generations.
Relevant Links
Mariel | Water Elementalism
Physical Traits
Aside from any traits gained from transformation (scales, gills, fins), half-Mariel also inherit the long tapered ears (halved in length) from their Mariel parent, as well as a perchance to a brilliant, unnatural hair color, and any possible skin or eye color available in their genetics from either parent as Mariel have a broad variety of coloration for both.

Magical Abilities
Born to a Mariel mother, a half-Mariel would have an ability for Water elementalism. Born to a mother of any other elemental race, the offspring would gain her ability. Children of a Mariel father gain no elementalism.

Lifespans
As Mariel live for around three hundred years, a half-Mariel with a human parent would live for around 150 years. With a parent of a longer lived race, their lifespan would be a median between the two parents’ races.

Half-Brech'mar

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:07 pm

Half-Brech’mar
The Brech’mar are not a race that typically reproduces with other races, but when they do, the most common partners are human. They are a short, stout people, the men hirsute and sometimes portly, the women voluptuous. Human men may find the the women attractive—if a bit shorter than they would prefer, but many Brech’mar women prefer men that are like their own, and ideally closer to their height. Human women might not find Brech’mar men so attractive considering their height, and a male Brech’mar’s interest in human women depends on the woman; a plump, shapely woman may interest them, but they wouldn’t care for slender women.

Brech’mar do have dealings with humans often though, they are a kindly and sociable people, and often deal in precious metals and gems in trade. The majority of trade is done by Brech’mar men though, and their people are highly monogamous and often marry rather young. They value tradition, and marrying a human (or other individual of another race) is against tradition. However, there is always a chance of falling in love with a traveling companion and looking beyond superficial traits and tradition, though sometimes those overlooked things come back to sabotage the relationship once the novelty wears off...
Physical Traits
A half-Brech’mar may inherit any number of combinations of height and build from their parents, but generally, they are taller than their Brech’mar parent and shorter than their human parent. As for build though, some may be exceptionally broad and stout compared to their human parent, or they’ll be a medium build, leaning more towards their human side.

Body hair may be rather heavy, even in women (but not to the extent of men). In terms of ears, a half-human, half-Brech’mar child will likely have slightly elongated pointed ears. Coloration is broad and varied and depends on the features of both parents. Both the Brech’mar and humans have a similar range of coloration, though humans are slightly more varied.

Magical Abilities
Born to a Brech’mar mother—which is the rarer of two unions—the offspring will have an ability for Earth Elementalism. However, it is most common for Brech’mar males to impregnate human women.

Lifespans
Born to a human parent, a half-Brech’mar would likely live to 150 to 200 years.

Half-Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:08 pm

Half-Idayn
The Idayn are a race that rarely reproduces with others, and believe in an ideal of racial purity. However, individuals will fall in love with who they will, and in these circumstances, the most common combination has been with Ochae’nafod and Dra’nafod who share their forest, and Zaedyn who inhabit the mountains between the Itray and Eldir forests. Much rarer is the union between Idayn and human (and other races are nearly unheard of).

The Idayn are not fond of humans—outright disdainful of them, in fact. Yet, there are many instances of curious young Idayn leaving the forest to ‘sew their wild oats’, and may fall in love with or have a fling with a human and end up impregnating their partner or becoming pregnant themselves. In the cases of a half-human Idayn, they will likely find a hard life ahead of them with either parent’s cultures. The Idayn will not readily accept a half-human child, often leading to that child growing up and leaving the forest. If raised amongst humans, they may have a better chance at happiness depending on their circumstances, but there is always a good chance that humans will ostracize them.

An interracial child born between an Idayn and another elemental race may find some kind of acceptance amongst the Idayn, but they would have a hard time finding a partner amongst the Idayn as an adult. Usually, it is easier for them to return to the other parent’s race (be they Ochae’nafod, Dra’nafod, Zaedyn, or otherwise). Very rarely do interracial bloodlines to persist amongst the Idayn, but these bloodlines have proven to prosper better amongst the other races.
Relevant Links
Idayn | Light Elementalism
Physical Traits
The Idayn are a fair race with pale shades of blond hair, fair skin, and light eyes. These traits may carry over into their interracial offspring, depending on traits from the other parent. Idayn who do have children outside their race often chose partners with dark hair, as those who are willing to pursue these affairs are likely to be attracted to what is different from their own people.

When born to a human parent, the ears of a half-Idayn will be half the length of a full-blooded Idayn. Born to another elemental race, the ears will be the same.

When combined with other races, there are other potential outstanding traits, and for more information, you should refer to the Zaedyn, Ochae’nafod, and Dra’nafod entries.

Magical Abilities
Born to an Idayn mother, the child will be incarnated with the soul of a light elemental and thus have the ability for Light elementalism. With a human father, the ability will be diminished from a full-blooded Idayn, but born to a father of another elemental race, they will be on par with other Idayn. If born to an Idayn father, they will not inherit Light elementalism.

Lifespans
The Idayn are an immortal race, but half-Idayn and half-human offspring can live as long as a thousand years. Born to a Dra’nafod and an Idayn, the offspring will maintain immortality, or could live for several thousand years. With an Ochae’nafod parent, they will live for at least a thousand years, or longer. With a Zaedyn parent, the lifespan may be a thousand years. Lifespans for half-Idayn can be incredibly long, and hard to discern, due to the immortality of their Idayn parent.

Half-Fayl'Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:08 pm

Half-Fayl’Idayn
The Fayl’Idayn themselves have mixed origins. Originally a splinter-group of the Idayn race that settled in the Ardir Forest in Kalesten, they intermingled with local Ochae’nafod and Dra’nafod clans, as well as humans from time to time. As a result, the Fayl’Idayn have a rather broad gene pool with various colorations and some greater variety in other superficial traits compared to their Idayn forebearers. Now, the “pot” has been thoroughly mixed and the Fayl’Idayn have evened out into some uniformity.

For their mixed past, interracial love is nowhere near normal for a Fayl’Idayn. Generally, most Fayl’Idayn marry each other and have families together. Only occasionally does a Fayl’Idayn fall in love with an individual of another race, but due to their troubles with their human neighbors in Kosony, most interracial romance occurs with Ochae’nafod and Dra’nafod. These unions are rarely openly shunned, but the children resulting often feel caught between two worlds. Some may end up gravitating toward one race or the other, often their mother’s race, especially if magic is a factor for them.

In the case of humans and Fayl’Idayn, the Fayl’Idayn will always be distrusting of them, but when one of their youths falls in love with them, or ends up having a child with one, the race as a whole will generally treat the child with respect, though the same can’t always be said of their peers. There are also a few cases of half-human, half-Idayn children and their families coming to the Ardir to seek acceptance when they are ostracized from Idayn society.
Relevant Links
Fayl’Idayn | Fae Magic
Physical Traits
When born to a human parent, a half-Fayl’Idayn will have tapered ears, half the length of their Fayl’Idayn parent’s ears. They also tend to have a hard time putting on fat, but may possibly have potential to put on heavy muscle depending on what comes from their human parent. The Fayl’Idayn have a broad range of light colored eyes and hair, but their skin tends to be fair, be it ivory white or with a slight tan. There is a small chance for heterochromia iridium (eyes of different colors) with the Fayl’Idayn, but there is less chance of this than with the Idayn.

With an Ochae’nafod parent, the interracial child will have the ability for shape-shifting, but to a diminished degree from their Ochae’nafod parent. However, they will have less potential for detrimental issues that affect other Ochae’nafod interracial offspring (such as permanent animal traits). This is due to their shared ancestry with the original form created for the Elemental races. See the Ochae’nafod entry for more information.

Magical Abilities
Born to a Fayl’Idayn mother, the child will have a faerie soul and have potential to use Fae magic. Born to an Ochae’nafod or Dra’nafod mother, the child will have a nymph soul and the ability for life elementalism. As their parent is another elemental race, they can stand on par with other Nafod peers in their Elementalism, even if they are not full-blooded Nafod.

Lifespans
Born to a human parent, their lifespan will be around 250-300 years. Born to a Ochae’nafod or Dra’nafod parent, they can live a normal lifespan for either parent race. As with all interracial mixes, their lifespan is a median between the maximum ages of their parents.

Half-Aeul'Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:08 pm

Half-Aeul’Idayn
The Aeul’Idayn are an isolated race, being the only race inhabiting Athok, but they do occasionally travel, and are more open to accepting visitors than some other Idayn races. At current, concerns for the environment are low for the Aeul’Idayn, so they are not defensive of their homeland from human incursion. However, they prefer living amongst their own kind, so while they may welcome visitors to Athok, they aren’t too fond of new people moving in with them—especially if those people can even tolerate the extreme cold.

The most common combination is with humans, often human sailors and fishermen who dock on Athok’s coasts during the warmer seasons and have a fling with a curious Aeul’Idayn woman. It is also common for Aeul’Idayn to want to see the rest of the world, so occasionally one of these travelers may fall in love with, or have a fling with someone of another race. The second most common union is with Zaedyn, as traveling Aeul’Idayn may retreat to the mountains for the cold they are more comfortable with and stay in a Zaedyn city where it is possible to meet and fall in love with a Zaedyn.
Physical Traits
The extremely pale features of the Aeul’Idayn may be passed down to their mixed-race offspring, depending on the traits of their other parent. When crossed with a human, the offspring’s ears will be half the length of their Aeul’Idayn parent’s ears.

For combinations with Zaedyn, see the Zaedyn entry for more information on traits from that race.

Magical Abilities
Born to an Aeul’Idayn mother, the child will be incarnated with the soul of Lycia, the ice elemental, thus inheriting the ability for Ice elementalism. With a human father, this ability will be diminished in comparison to their full-blooded peers, but with a father of another elemental race, their ability will be on par with other Aeul’Idayn. Born to a human mother, a half-Aeul’Idayn will have no elementalism, but born to a mother of another elemental race, they will inherit her element.

Also, those that are incarnated with Lycia souls will find heat very uncomfortable and prefer colder regions.

Lifespan
Born to a human parent, they will live for around 250-300 years. Born to a Zaedyn parent, they will live for the 500 years typical of both races. For all other races, find an agreeable median between the two.

Half-Ery'Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:09 pm

Half-Ery’Idayn
The Ery’Idayn are one of the few races that commonly reproduces with humans, and their own race is quite a thorough mix of human and Idayn heritage. There are some tribes deep in the Great Desert who are nearly pure-blooded Ery’Idayn, but where they live close to humans they are rather thoroughly mixed. As a whole, the Ery’Idayn and humans live separately, with only a few individuals living with the other culture. Though mixing does occur quite frequently, many Ery’Idayn are reluctant to involve themselves romantically with humans considering their shorter lifespans and cultural differences. The relationships that do occur are either short-lived flings, or deep romantic love when they choose to defy convention.

Unions between other races are rare, as the desert is only inhabited by humans, Ery’Idayn, and Asath. It is rather uncommon for Ery’Idayn to leave the desert.

Ery’Idayn
Physical Traits
The pure Ery’Idayn are dark skinned with pale hair and eye colors, but due to the interbreeding of local human tribes, dark hair and eye colors do occur with frequency, especially for those close to human settlements. Their ears also vary in length due to their mixed heritage, and as usual, the offspring of an Ery’Idayn and a human will have ears half the length of their Ery’Idayn parent. The humans of the region share the typical human averages, while the Ery’Idayn are especially tall, meaning that the exceptional height of the Ery’Idayn could be a notable trait in a mixed-race individual. The humans they commonly interbreed are dark skinned like they are, if not darker, with black hair that is from coarse tight curls to large loose curls and waves, and brown, gold, or hazel eyes. The frequency of heterochromia iridium is no less frequent among the Ery’Idayn as it is amongst pure-blooded humans—which is to say, it is incredibly rare.

Magical Abilities
The Ery’Idayn do not have any elementalist abilities. There is no magical ability stood to be inherited by a half-Ery’Idayn.

Lifespan
Half-Ery’Idayn live for around one hundred years, and age at a slightly slower rate than full-blooded humans once they reach adulthood. Up until around the age of sixty, a half-Ery’Idayn would appear to between twenty to thirty, from sixty to ninety they would appear to be between forty and fifty years old, and so on.

Half-Oir'Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:09 pm

Half-Oir’Idayn
The Oir’Idayn share their grassland with tribes of humans, Eain’Idayn, Asath, and some Ochae’nafod, but each group usually sticks to their own territories. They keep to themselves, for the most part, which maintains the purity of their race, but there have been a few instances of inter-mating with humans and Ochae’nafod. Even rarer is the opportunity to mate with an individual of other races, as very few Oir’Idayn ever leave the grassland.
Relevant Links
Oir’Idayn
Physical Traits
The Oir’Idayn are a petite race of Idayn with tan skin, fair hair, and light eyes, and their most common partners are humans of primitive tribes scattered throughout the grassland who have reddish-brown skin, black hair, and predominantly dark eyes, with heights among average for humans, and taller than the Oir’Idayn. This is the most likely combination, and offspring generally take after their human parent’s darker features and height. Their ears are halved in length from their Oir’Idayn parent. Other combinations (with Ochae’nafod, for example) will depend on the other parent’s race, of course.

Magical Abilities
The Oir’Idayn no longer have elementalism, so their offspring do not stand to inherit magic abilities. In a combination with an Ochae’nafod, the offspring will have Life elementalism if their mother is Ochae’nafod, and can be as powerful as their Ochae’nafod peers.

Lifespans
Born to a human and an Oir’Idayn, the offspring would have a potential lifespan of 250 years. An Oir’Idayn and Ochae’nafod combination would live for around 750-800 years. Other combinations would be a median between the five hundred year lifespan of the Oir’Idayn and the other parent race.

Half-Ur'Idayn

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:09 pm

Half-Ur’Idayn
The Ur’Idayn race was thoroughly mixed with humans many generations ago, and in the following generations, they returned to a uniformity, but different from their original Idayn heritage. Unlike their cousins the Ery’Idayn and Fayl’Idayn, mixing with humans was not done through romance; the humans native to the Ur’Idayn rainforest were too destructive for the liking of the Ur’Idayn, and the Ur’Idayn waged war against them. The slaughtered many, but they also took many slaves and bore children with them, leading to their current state. However, their disdain for humans remains, and they rarely leave their forest, making human and Ur’Idayn crosses practically unheard of.

As the Ur’Idayn don’t travel much, they don’t reproduce with other races much. Most of their interracial romances are with Ochae’nafod, and very rarely Dra’nafod and Zaedyn. The feral nature of the Ur’Idayn often make them unappealing to the more refined taste of the Zaedyn and Dra’nafod, however.
Relevant Links
Ur’Idayn
Physical Traits
The Ur’Idayn’s dark features are usually carried over into their mixed offspring, if the other parent has fairer features. When mixed with a human, their ears are half the length of a full-blooded Ur’Idayn. Heterochromia iridium does not typically occur from an Ur’Idayn union.

See the Ochae’nafod entry for more information on traits of an Ochae’nafod union.

Magical Abilities
The Ur’Idayn do not have any inherited magic, but they sometimes produce adept shamans. When a half-Ur’Idayn child is born to an Ochae’nafod mother, they will inherit the ability for Life elementalism, but there is a chance that it will be diminished in comparison to other Ochae’nafod peers. This is the same complication that will appear with unions between an Ur’Idayn and other elemental races.

Lifespan
Born to a human and Ur’Idayn, the offspring will stand to live to around one hundred years, if a few decades longer. Aging is slightly slower than with humans. Ochae’nafod and Ur’Idayn mixes tend to live for around five hundred years. Any other combinations will be a median between the two-hundred year lifespan of the Ur’Idayn and the other parent’s race.

Half-Ochae'nafod

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Jun 08, 2009 6:10 pm

Half-Ochae’nafod
As far as interracials go, half-Ochae’nafod are one of the most common mixes alongside half-Idayn, half-Dra’nafod, and half-Danaij. The Ochae’nafod are wide-spread throughout Thiskel and Kalesten, though they tend to live secretly in the wilderness. Relations with humans are often tense, but individual Ochae’nafod and humans can meet and easily fall in love. Ochae’nafod are typically very beautiful to the standards of most races, which only makes humans more receptive. Aside from humans, Ochae’nafod may commonly make partners of Fayl’Idayn in Kalesten’s Ardir Forest, Idayn in the Eldir and Itray forests of Thiskel, Ur’Idayn in the rainforests of southern Kalesten, Dra’nafod, Zaedyn, and other races. Depending on the species their clan is bonded to, monogamy may or may not be an issue.

Half-Ochae’nafod inherit shape-shifting ability regardless of which gender of Ochae’nafod is their parent, though they will not gain Life Elementalism unless born to an Ochae’nafod mother. However, their shape-shifting is limited and often more extreme than their full-blooded parents. Where as a full-blooded Ochae’nafod can shift to many degrees, a half-Ochae’nafod may have only two or three degrees; their natural form, a strongly anthropomorphic form between human and animal (this degree may be skipped all together for some), and a full animal form. At first, many half-Ochae’nafod may begin shape-shifting when Adun’s main moon, Nirya, waxes at its fullest. The shape-shifting is forced, and usually, they maintain control over their human mind, but they often feel torn between animalistic instincts and their rational mind when in this form. Depending on the animal their Ochae’nafod side is bonded too, they are generally not violent if they give into their bestial instincts, unless they feel threatened. Even most carnivores would sooner flee a city than slaughter the nearby humans.
Physical Traits
Usually, a half-Ochae’nafod and half-human would appear to be a “half-elf”, whereas they inherit the long tapered ears (halved in length from normal with a human parent), general good looks, and perhaps a slim frame. These individuals can easily be mistaken for half-Idayn. However, due to the variety in clans, they may differ greatly from the general concept of half-Idayn, making their Ochae’nafod roots even more obvious.

There is also a small chance for a half-Ochae’nafod to inherit some animal features, but this is rare. Due to some error in their mixed genes, some half-Ochae’nafod may be born with features such as animal ears, a tail, digitigrade legs, fur (or feathers or scales), or slight deformities that make them look more like their bonded animal. Or, when they are older, they may sprout horns or antlers, or teeth that resemble an animal’s (elongated canines, for example). This generally only happens with a single feature, and half-Ochae’nafod do not look like fully anthropomorphic individuals with digitigrade legs, tails, fur, and ears. Those that do have these traits are often ostracized and depending on the severity, they may suffer more that simple rejection. For example, a child with digitigrade legs would suffer more than a child with “cute” little fox ears or a fluffy tail. Shape-shifting does not come easily to half-breeds, so they may be stuck with these traits for the rest of their lives.

For the normal human or “half-elf” looking Ochae’nafod, coloration is a mixed bag depending on their parents’ features. They may have features that are vaguely reminiscent of an animal’s like their Ochae’nafod parent, though not through deformity (such as a somewhat cat-like face, or big doe eyes). When it comes to eye color, most Ochae’nafod maintain an eye color that is normal for the bonded species (commonly gold or brown), but if the child inherits their human parent’s eye color, when they shift forms, they will keep their human eye color which would mark them as abnormal for their species when fully in animal form.

Magical Abilities
Born to an Ochae’nafod mother, the offspring will be incarnated with a Nymph soul and have the ability for Life elementalism, but the ability will be diminished if the father is human. If the father is of another elemental race, the ability will stand on par with Ochae’nafod peers of the same age. Born to a mother of another elemental race, the offspring will inherit the mother’s elementalism to it’s full potential.

Lifespans
With a human parent, a half-Ochae’nafod will live for around five hundred years. With other races, their maximum age is a median between the thousand year lifespan of the Ochae’nafod and the typical lifespan of the other parent’s race.

Half-Dra'nafod

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:47 pm

Half-Dra’nafod
One of the four most common interracial combinations alongside Idayn, Ochae’nafod, and Danaij. Dra’nafod are wide-spread across temperate Thiskel and Kalesten, but live in secret deep within forests. They do not typically have a high opinion of humans, but individuals can build a relationship. Aside from humans, Dra’nafod also make common partners of the Fayl’Idayn in the Ardir Forest of Kalesten, Idayn in the Itray and Eldir forests of Thiskel, Zaedyn, Ochae’nafod, and some other races. As a non-monogamous race, Dra’nafod are not bound by traditions of marriage when it comes to reproducing either.

There are a number of half-Dra’nafod, and their own offspring, in the nation of Emkal where the local Dra’nafod have uncommonly mingled with humans in order to help them find better ways of using magic that doesn’t harm the environment. In Emkal, there are individuals that are the result of several generations of human and Dra’nafod interbreeding.

The ability for shape-shifting in the Dra’nafod is less pronounced in their interracial offspring and is actually quite rare to be inherited. It may appear in later generations if a mixed individual mates with a full-blooded Dra’nafod, or even another half-Dra’nafod.
Physical Traits
One of the most notable traits of the Dra’nafod is the incredible, androgynous beauty, which would be inherited by an interracial child. They would also gain the long tapered ears, halved in length, if with a human parent. There is also a propensity to inherit the strange earthy and colorful hair colors that the Dra’nafod have.

Magical Abilities
An interracial child born to a Dra’nafod mother will be incarnated with the soul of a Dryad and inherit Life elementalism, but the ability will be diminished with a human father. If the father is of another elemental race, the ability will stand on par with peers of the same age. Born to a mother of another elemental race, they will inherit her elementalism.

Lifespans
A half-Dra’nafod and half-human hybrid will live for approximately 500-800 years, those born to a Dra’nafod mother tend to live longer. Born to a parent of another race, the offspring will live a lifespan that is a median between the typical 1000 year lifespan of the Dra’nafod and the lifespan of the other parent. Some Dra’nafod live longer than 1000 years, however, and if the parent has this potential, it is possible for the life of their offspring to be extended beyond the approximated 500 years, but as stated above, an extended lifespan only applies to those born to an Dra’nafod mother, as it seems their powerful Life elementalism gives them this boost to longevity.

Half-Danaij

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:48 pm

Half-Danaij
The most common combination of Danaij hybrid is human and Danaij, though this is only typical in the Forsaken Land. While the Danaij consider humans to be lesser beings, they are a highly sexual race and will often rape humans, or keep them as sex slaves. Most nobles have harems of their own, which contain lower-class Danaij, humans, and rarely individuals of other races. In these harems, it is common for females to become pregnant, and how the offspring are dealt with is at the decision of their master; many allow them to keep their offspring until they can be sold as slaves, others may have the babies disposed of or even aborted, and very few actually treasure their illegitimate children. Female Danaij nobles have their own harems, and if they become pregnant by a human, they often choose to abort the pregnancy, but some will bear their mixed children and possibly even raise them, though they are often not welcome in Danaij high society.

For the lower-class Danaij, harems are not an option, but they are known to rape human women if the mood and opportunity arises. It is often a means of asserting their racial dominance, more than it is a satiation of desires. Of course, consensual sex and prostitution are also options for human women bearing Danaij children. For low-class female Danaij, they may have affairs or relationships with human men, leading to half-Danaij offspring who have a better shot at a “normal” life compared to nobles.

The Danaij also reproduce with their sub-race, the Danaij’vai, with some frequency, and the offspring are often more respected than half-human combinations, but face some ostracism in certain circles. As they do not often leave the Forsaken Land, nor do other races visit them (the Forsaken Land is populated by Danaij, Danaij’vai, humans, Asath, and Kuzo), other combinations are rare. There is potential for other racial combinations through the Danaij slave trade, as they have connections with slavers from the rest of the world, and there is also potential in the odd romantic relationship between a traveling Danaij and someone from a different race, or in any small pocket communities of Danaij hidden in other places in the world (such as in Serdenaugh).
Relevant Links
Danaij | Dark Elementalism
Physical Traits
Half-Danaij inherit a lighter, somewhat grayish version of their Danaij parent’s skin color. This can be an ashy pink, green, blue, violet, or other shade. Their ears are halved in length from a full-blooded Danaij. Hair color can range from any color from either parent, though some half-Danaij with a human parent who has black hair and Danaij parent with white hair may inherit black hair with streaks of white limited to a white forelock, or streaks throughout the hair. They may also inherit hair that is a salt and pepper mix of black and white.

Between a human and a Danaij, the offspring’s ears would be half the length of a full-blooded Danaij.

When crossed with Danaij’vai, the bone spurs that break through the skin are less pronounced, sometimes never breaking the skin on their own. Coloration is the same for both races, but they may be slightly larger than their Danaij peers.

Magical Abilities
Born to a Danaij or Danaij’vai mother, the offspring will have the ability for Dark Elementalism, but if the father is human, the ability will be diminished. Born to a Danaij father and a human, the child will have no ability for elementalism. The Danaij and Danaij’vai both have Dark Elementalism, so nothing would be lost to the offspring magic-wise. Born to a mother of another elemental race, the offspring will have the ability for her respective elementalism, but it may be diminished, unless the half-Danaij can prove their loyalty to their mother’s god.

Lifespans
A half-Danaij, half-human hybrid can live between two hundred to five hundred years, depending on the stock of their Danaij parent (the noble clans have longer lifespans than the commoners). Born to a Danaij and a Danaij’vai, their lifespan is typically between 300-800 years. Other combinations would be a median between the Danaij parent’s natural lifespan (between 500 to 1000, depending on their breeding) and the maximum lifespan of their other parent’s race.

Half-Danaij'vai

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:48 pm

Half-Danaij’vai
The Danaij’vai are a fierce warrior sub-race of the Danaij, and share many of the Danaij features, with the exception of their exceptional height and physique, and most notably, the thorny bone spurs that grow along prominent boney places along their body. They are a proud race, and usually only chose to mate with their own kind, but there are many cases of romance between Danaij and Danaij’vai. Many Danaij women find the physique of Danaij’vai appealing and entice them to their beds, though not many Danaij men find the women as appealing.

The Danaij’vai are nowhere near as likely to rape women (Danaij’vai, Danaij, or human) as the Danaij are, so nearly all unions are consensual. While they do prefer to mate with their own kind, occasionally there are unions between humans and Danaij’vai. Very rare, practically unheard of, are unions with other races due to the seclusion of Danaij’vai in the Forsaken Land.
Physical Traits
The iconic bone thorns of the Danaij’vai are the biggest question when it comes to mixed-race offspring. A half-Danaij’vai offspring stands to inherit the thorns, but to a less prominent degree. The thorns, which come in at puberty, do not always fully erupt, and those that due typically appear on the brow, cheekbones, collarbone, and point of the hips. The thorns do not typically erupt on the forearms, shins, or jaw for a half-blood. Often, a few thorns will erupt on the most prominent points, a few others will only partially develop and not break the skin, and the rest will not emerge at all.

The Danaij’vai have the same coloration as the Danaij, and when they reproduce with humans (or other races of the same coloration), the skin color is diluted to a grayish tone. The Danaij’vai’s skin skin coloration is typically on the warmer spectrum—red-black, brown-black—so as a result, the mixed-race offspring are often a rosy-gray or brownish-gray skin color. Occasionally, other colors such as blue-black, violet-black, and green-black occur in Danaij’vai, often as a result of past Danaij interbreeding, so a diluted version of these colors would appear in the mixed-race offspring if applicable. There is also a chance of silver or white and black hair color mixed in the offspring if the human parent has black hair. Born to a human parent, the offspring’s ears will also be half the length of a full-blooded Danaij’vai. Half-Danaij’vai also stand to inherit the impressive size of the Danaij’vai.

Magical Abilities
Like the Danaij, the Danaij’vai have the ability for Dark Elementalism, but they are more martial oriented, so it isn’t as developed as their Danaij cousins. They do have the potential, they just don’t often choose to exercise it. Those mixed between Danaij and Danaij’vai have the same potential for Dark Elementalism. Born to a Danaij’vai mother and a human father, the offspring would have Dark Elementalism to a diminished degree.

Lifespan
The Danaij’vai live for up to five hundred years, and combined with a Danaij, their offspring could live between 300-800 years, depending on the stock of the Danaij parent. Born to a human parent, the offspring would live around two hundred and fifty years. Any other combination is a median between the maximum ages of both parent races.

Half-Kiar

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:49 pm

Half-Kiar
The petite Kiar race tends toward isolationism, and interracial reproduction is rare amongst them for several reasons. They are a strongly monogamous race that often marries in early adulthood. Extra-marital flings are exceptionally rare, and if a Kiar were to have children with a member of another race, it would either be through marriage or rape. Kiar are also one of the shortest-lived races, living a mere twenty years. Kiar may find this age gap intimidating, even with a human partner. Secondly, there is their size. Humans and other races would be further intimidating to a Kiar due to their height, whereas humans may find a Kiar’s size too close to a young child to be appealing, coupled with the fact that their prime marriageable ages are under ten years of age. A female Kiar bearing the child of a larger race could also face complications during delivery that could threaten her life.

Kiar might find a little more comfort for the issue of size amongst Brech’mar or Ochae’nafod of clans bonded to smaller animals. Still, it is quite rare for a Kiar to seek a relationship outside their people.
Relevant Links
Kiar
Physical Traits
Most notably is the issue of size; a child born to a Kiar and another race typically are of a height that is a median between both parents but taller than the Kiar and shorter than the other parent. They share many similar traits with humans otherwise, making height the only notable trait of mixed race offspring. When combined with elemental races, height also plays a role, but as they have the same ears as humans, the tapered ears are halved in length from their elemental parent.

Magical Abilities
The Kiar have no inherent magical abilities. If born to a mother of an elemental race, Kiar blood may dilute the ability for elementalism in the offspring.

Lifespan
The Kiar’s twenty year lifespan cuts down the lives of their own mixed-race offspring as well. Born between a human and a Kiar, the offspring would have a lifespan of approximately forty to sixty years, depending on health. Their aging is faster than normal for a human—though not as fast as a Kiar, and the aging process for youth generally applies to most other interracial combinations. A half-Kiar will grow the equivalent of five years in their first year, then the equivalent six to nine years in the second year, ten to twelve in the third year, thirteen to fifteen in the fourth year, sixteen to eighteen in the fifth year, and finally reaching full maturity at eight years of age. For a half-human Kiar hybrid, their teen years are the equivalent of their twenties to thirties, twenty equal to thirties to forties, thirty equal to forties to fifties, forties equal to fifties to sixties, and so on, meaning that they are between fifteen to twenty years older physically compared to their human counterparts.

For curiosity’s sake, if a Kiar reproduces with a race that is much longer lived, here are the results for lifespan;
  • For a partner with a 200 year lifespan, the offspring would live around 80 years.
  • For a partner with a 300 year lifespan, the offspring would live around 100 years.
  • For a partner with a 500 year lifespan, the offspring would live around 150 years.
  • For a partner with a 1000 year lifespan, the offspring would live around 400 years.
  • In the rare case of reproduction with the Kuzo, who have a 40 year lifespan, the offspring may live around 10 years longer than their Kiar parent.
For any other combination, ask advice from the GM or come to your own conclusion (which will be approved by the GM anyway).

Half-Iengi

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:49 pm

Half-Iengi
These giants rarely reproduce, even on their own, as they are a secluded and long-lived race. Not highly intelligent, even animalistic, they do not have romantic relationships with humans and other races. In the rare cases of half-Iengi, it is most typically children born to human women who have been raped by smaller males for whom finding a female Iengi is far and in between. They can be dangerous to their mothers to bear, as well, often being larger than the average human baby, though the constraints of their mother’s frame may significantly reduce the size of the fetus.

Half-Iengi are usually poorly received in human communities, but they are typically simple-minded. They can at least find some usefulness in farming communities where their size and strength makes them valuable in manual labor, but their intelligence is often below human intellect, though above Iengi intellect. They will usually never marry, and spend solitary lives cared for by their human family.
Relevant Links
Iengi
Physical Traits
Namely, their size. Usually the smaller Iengi are the only ones capable of copulating with a human, and they stand around ten feet tall. Their offspring may stand around 7’-8’ in height.

Magical Abilities
The Iengi have no magic and low capacity for spiritual strength. Their interracial offspring often lack the intelligence and spiritual strength to use magic.

Lifespan
A half-Iengi, half-human hybrid can live to be around 100-250 years old, depending on the potential lifespan of their Iengi parent, which could be between 200 and 300 years. They will age slightly slower than humans.

Half-Kuzo

Post by World of Aserra » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:49 pm

Half-Kuzo
Unions between Kuzo and other races are rarely consensual. The Kuzo are a basal and instinctual race, and when a group of males comes across a lone female of any race, they will revel in the chance to have their way with her. Females that can’t defend themselves can fall victim to them, either being raped and abandoned, or kidnapped to fill a harem for a more intelligent Kuzo chieftains.

Offspring born of these unions are ostracized in human society, but in Kuzo society their higher intelligence and magical capacity can gain them high positions in Kuzo tribes. Half-Kuzo can be around the same level of intelligence as the average human, but do not have potential for human genius. Due to this higher intelligence, they may not feel comfortable with the less intelligent Kuzo, therefore ostracizing themselves from both societies.
Relevant Links
Kuzo
Physical Traits
Half-Kuzo stand to inherit a number of features that humans and other races would find unattractive; sickly greenish or brackish toned skin, prominent and knobby features, oddly shaped ears, disturbing Kuzo eyes, and other features. They are an odd mix somewhere in between the appearance of both their parent races.

Magic Abilities
The Kuzo have no inherent magic and low spiritual capacity, though they sometimes practice shamanism. Half-Kuzo may have greater spiritual capacity than their Kuzo kin, putting them in a position to be potentially powerful shamans amongst the clan if they chose that route.

Lifespan
The Kuzo have a potential lifespan of around 40 years, though few manage to live that long. A half-Kuzo could stand to live up to sixty or seventy years if born to a human parent, though would more likely live to the age of 40 or 50.

Half-Fae/Changelings

Post by World of Aserra » Fri Mar 09, 2012 7:35 pm

Half-Fae/Changelings
The most common extra-planar offspring are changelings, and thus the only ones we will discuss in this thread. Demi-gods, half-demons, and other combinations will require special scrutiny by the GM and staff, and will be addressed individually.

Usually the offspring of faeries, changelings are conceived by faeries seducing human men and having sex with them. Their goal is research. Iron is toxic to fae and inhibits their magic, yet human children with iron in their very blood can learn fae magic. To study this, they impregnate themselves with half-human offspring, which inherit the shape-shifting ability of faeries. These half-fae children are swapped with human babies and take on the appearance of the child they are replacing. Meanwhile, the faeries take away the human baby to raise it and teach it fae magic so that they can try to understand how humans can master their magic.

The swap can take place between birth and the first year of age. Fairies may steal infants from the crib while unattended, or may even pose as midwives to swap the baby at birth. Changeling swaps are very rare, as fairies try not to draw attention to their activities. Approximately 1 in 250,000 human babies may be swapped, but this is not definitive. Human parents unknowingly raise the changeling, assuming it to be their child. Aside from being tricked by the changeling’s shape-shifting, the faerie may have also placed a glamer upon the parents to further convince them that it is their child, allowing them to push any inconsistencies to the back of their mind. However, other family members, friends, or neighbors may become suspicious that the child is abnormal.
Relevant Links
Fae | Fae Magic
Physical Traits
Mostly, changelings look like the child they are replacing and the product of the parents that are raising them. Their shape-shifting is a latent ability that, through their childhood, they are not consciously aware of after initially taking on the form of the baby they are replacing. As they mature, they will take on the features of the parents raising them so that it can easily be believed that it is their child. However, there are subtle fae traits that may be apparent. Changelings often tend to be more beautiful and androgynous, and their skin has an unearthly shimmer to it.

Magic Abilities
Changelings have an aptitude for fae magic, which they often discover during the course of their lives. They tend to be self-taught and have their own way of applying magic, but they can never measure up to their faerie heritage. Even if taught by a faerie, the influence of their human culture will curb their natural ability.

Lifespan
Changelings can live about twice as long as a human, as their fae blood slows aging. Around the age of fifteen, their aging process slows to one-tenth the speed of a human, meaning that they age one year for every ten years lived, until the age of twenty-five (at which point they still appear to be sixteen). At 25, the changeling’s aging slows even further to one-twentieth the speed (one year for every twenty), so by the age of forty-five, they still look only seventeen, at 85 they appear 18, at 105 they appear 19, and so on. This rate continues for around one hundred years from the age of 25, at which point their human blood reasserts itself and aging slows to half the rate of a human’s aging. Most changelings will live around 150-175 years, or push around 200 years.
